To Zenki Blanche Hartman
On the loss of her husband Lou

my Zen teacher
just lost her husband
and partner of 60 years
concerned of her suffering
I want to provide some relief
But what can I say?
Words are so insufficient
She turns and silently we bow
and after we silently hug
transcending all words

11.19.10
Wetter than the fog
Some open their umbrellas
Others just walk fast

She keeps me really busy
No Haikus for now

07.10.06
Inside the zendo
Sound of a distant fog horn
Disturbs the silence

06.21.06
oh! golden poppies
growing among the weeds--look!
a pleasant surprise

03.31.06
rain tapping window
trapped inside this holiday
sleepy afternoon

03.18.06

watching beautiful women
transverse the zendo

01.24.06
after morning meditation
a woman crosses my path
in too much of a hurry
to notice the beautiful sunrise

By: Ryokan (1758 - 1831)
Too lazy to be ambitious,
I let the world take care of itself.
Ten days' worth of rice in my bag;
a bundle of twigs by the fireplace.
Why chatter about delusion and enlightenment?
Listening to the night rain on my roof,
I sit comfortably, with both legs stretched out.

06.21.05
I can feel her ribs
While I'm massaging her back
Working the moguls

02.03.05
Hot tub! Oh Hot Tub!
I want to be in one NOW!
Sooth this tense body

08.15.04
Working for nothing
That's life at a nonprofit
Subsistance wages.

I'm up in Napa
Mud baths in Calistoga
Sound so good right now.

07.26.04
Having cut my 500th carrot
Working to feed the hungry
I grapple with bordom
when my mind is someplace else.

06.18.04

04.27.04
From Michael Kretz:

even the wild cat
hunts for sex
a hot summer day

04.27.04
My responce:

On such a hot day
Wild cats may still hunt for sex
I'm hiding at home

04.27.04
Mike's response to my response:

in this drastic heat
leaves wither dry and fall
the beer keg is frosty cold

04.23.04
Ah, Ba-da-bingo!
I hope the nuns don't spank me
Bad enough losing

Big Butch Bingo
That's the theme in May
Lead by a 6 1/2 foot tall nun
With a beard
And a leather paddle
For those who are bad
And there are a lot of them
In this crowd
But not everyone
Wants to get spanked
Or made over with bingo markers
Or french kiss Sister Dana
I'm here to win
And not to kiss a nun
Especially a male one
Especially in pubic!

04.11.04
After the hot tub
There's not much to write about
Can't beat the bubbles

03.31.04
Hot tub in the sun
Melting away my tension
What a way to live

Hot tub in the sun
Definately not Frisco
Where it's always cold

Hot tub in the sun
My God they are all naked!
My God so am I!

St Patrick's Day 2004
Walking down through the Tenderloin
I hear the clanging of brass
The dissonance of Chinese Cymbals
Ah, there, between the buildings
A dragon is headed down Market Street
Now I understand
The St. Patrick's Day parade

03.12.04
The taqueria
Four buck veggie burrito
A gift from the gods!

I have been meaning to write something here, and I was not going to leave the story about my trip to the land of the fez up forever. Originally, this was just going to be a page of links to use as my home page. But I don't have much to say except that I'm glad it's not raining right now. I have errands tomorrow morning and I hope it's not raining then. Anyway, I just got back from volunteering at The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. I walked home a young Japanese woman named Shima who has been in the USA for four days. She was impressed at my ability to count to five in Japanese. She doesn't know that I can curse in Korean too!

This January I went to the East/West Shrine Game at Pac Bell Park. This game has players from all over the nation playing a game that is, well, to say the least--weird! There is no blitzing, so it really is football light. I arrived as the East team was kicking the extra point after a touch down. The defence made a half hearted attempt to block the kick by jumping up in the air with their hands up. But besides that, there were many other reasons that the game was strange. First, I have never seen so many fezs in one place! Unfortunately, the Shriners left their little cars at home. Second, the last time I saw that many clowns at a football game when the Raiders game I went to this past season. Everyone was wearing a balloon hat (at least those not wearing a fez) or holding a balloon flower or sword. Third was that there were military personnel in their dress greens. I never saw such an old group sergeants in my life. I was offered the rank of sergeant if I re-enlisted at the age of 22. There were sergeants older than me and they had grey hair! The worst thing was the fact that the stadium had half the spectators that a Giants game would have had, but the lines for food were just as long!
